Diseases of the elbow

Basic information on diseases of the elbow for patients in our osteopathic practice

Tennis elbow (Lateral epicondylitis)

Tennis elbow is the name given to an overuse injury involving the extensor tendons of the hand at their boney insertion at the outer elbow. Despite the name, this condition is not only found in athletes, but most commonly occurs in the general population due to overuse.

The pain often radiates from the outer elbow into the forearm and hand. Everyday activities such as shaking hands, carrying a cup or operating doorknobs can become difficult.

Golfer’s arm (Medial epicondylitis)

Golfer’s arm is the name given to an overuse injury involving the flexor tendons of the hand at their boney insertion at the outer elbow. Despite the name, this condition is not only present in athletes such as golfers or weight lifters, but most commonly occurs in the general population due to overuse. Similar to tennis elbow, the pain extends from the elbow into the wrist, but is more pronounced on the inside of the forearm. The clenching of the fist is painful and sometimes the forearm feels stiff. More rarely, there is also numbness in the fingers.
